Letter: Why I’m voting “yes” on Measure G

I’m upset every time I see another big oil ad to vote no on Measure G. Ad funders are protecting their profits, putting at risk SLO County.
These ads are everywhere, thanks to $5.4 million of big oil funding. They’d ask you to believe they have safely produced oil. This is just not true. Consider the Avila Beach pipeline leak. Groundwater is still contaminated. Consider the Guadalupe Oil Field leak. Groundwater is still contaminated. Consider the Refugio oil pipeline leak. Oil leaked into the ocean. And nationally, fracking has proven to be even more difficult to manage safely. Google these and see the facts, perhaps after a misleading No-On-G ad.
The truth is Measure G will protect our precious water and environment by prohibiting new oil wells and dangerous hydraulic fracturing.
The No-On-G myth is Measure G, “Shuts down existing production in San Luis Obispo County.” Even the most cursory read of Measure G, or the official 53-word summary, shows this is untrue. Measure G explicitly says existing oil wells can continue, so the oil well jobs in SLO County can continue, economic activity can continue, tax revenue can continue.
Oil extraction will phase out as sustainable energy will phase in. This is what we need. Measure G will help.
