Knife wielding suicidal man dies after being shot by police
Officers attempted to subdue the man using less than lethal means
–A suicidal man wielding a knife was shot by police on Wednesday and has died as a result of the injuries he sustained in an incident with Santa Maria PD.
Just before 9 a.m., police say they responded to the intersection of Enos Drive and South Broadway to reports of man holding a large knife. The man was reported to have walked into a bank at one point. When officers arrived, in the area, they located the man in front of FoodsCo, located at 1465 S. Broadway in Santa Maria. Officers attempted to negotiate with him for some time, but negotiations failed and the man continued to hold the knife in a threatening manner, according to police.
Officers attempted to subdue the man using less than lethal means. Several attempts to subdue him in this manner had no effect, police say.
The man began stabbing himself then charged at officers with the knife at which point he was shot by officers. He was transported to the hospital immediately and has since passed as a result of his injuries.
