Kiwanis Club leads cleanup efforts, receives recognition, hosts fundraiser
February updates from the Atascadero Kiwanis Club
– A dedicated group of Atascadero Kiwanis Club volunteers, led by Bob Fredrichsen, is making a significant impact with their monthly highway cleanup initiative. Every last Thursday of the month, Kiwanians armed with bright orange trash bags clear debris from Templeton High School to the Del Rio Road off-ramp along northbound US 101. The cleanup effort addresses various items, including cardboard, plastic parts from passing motorists, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles. The club receives a monthly stipend from CalTrans, and the club’s name graces the freeway sign as a recognition of itscommunity service.
During one of the cleanup sessions, Denny Howland stumbled upon an unexpected discovery — a $100 bill. Speculation circulates about whether Bob strategically planted the bill to ensure a consistent volunteer turnout, with reports of other small change findings adding an element of intrigue to the cleanup efforts.
Volunteer service group of the year
Atascadero Kiwanis was honored as the Volunteer Service Group of the Year for SLO County. Lieutenant Governor Albert Almodova accepted the award on behalf of the club at a breakfast ceremony held at Madonna Inn on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The accolade was presented by the Boys and Girls Club of Mid Central Coast.
Show choir fundraiser success
Transitioning from community service to fundraising, Kiwanis Hall underwent a transformation into a Broadway theater for the annual Show Choir fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 16. Organized by teacher Carrie Jones’ students, with support from parent booster Rayna McEntire, the event featured more than a dozen girls singing Broadway-inspired songs. Atascadero Kiwanis provided the hall for free, along with a tri-tip dinner for both performers and parents. The event’s success was further enhanced by a silent auction featuring items donated by the local business community, contributing additional funds to support community initiatives.
‘Super’ Super Bowl party
Atascadero Kiwanis members gathered for a “Super” Super Bowl Party hosted by Mark and Sue Dariz on Sunday, Feb. 11. Several Kiwanians attended to watch the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, enjoying a spread of delicious food prepared by Mark and Albert, showcasing their barbecuing skills.
