Khruangbin band announces stop at Santa Barbara Bowl
Special guest band Kikigaku Moyo will join them
–Khruangbin will play at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
The band’s work weaves together far-flung musical languages like East Asian surf-rock, Persian funk and Jamaican dub into mellifluous harmony. On its third album, the band is finally adding vocals to its musical pieces.
The Houston group featuring bassist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer DJ Johnson has years of touring experience, playing to audiences across North and South America, Europe and southeast Asia. They have released two acclaimed albums called “The Universe Smiles Upon You” and “Con Todo El Mundo”.
They went to work on their third album, “Mordechai” in their farmhouse studio in Burton, Texas.
Musically, the band’s ever-restless ear saw it pulling reference points for its album from Pakistan, Korea, and West Africa, incorporating strains of Indian chanting boxes and Congolese syncopated guitar. But more than anything, the album became a celebration of Houston, the eclectic city that had nurtured them, and a cultural nexus where you can check out country and zydeco, trap rap, or avant-garde opera on any given night.
The special guest is the band Kikigaku Moyo, which is comprised of a very close group of five friends that play music associated with space and psychedelica. This band began its career busking in 2012 on the streets of Tokyo, Japan.
Tickets are now available for sale on the concert page and prices start at $39.50 plus any applicable fees. The Santa Barbara Bowl can seat over 4,000 people and is located at 1122 North Milpas Street, Santa Barbara, Calif, 93103.
