Man found unresponsive during routine cell check

– A 59-year-old San Luis Obispo man died at the County Jail on May 25 after jail staff found him unresponsive during a routine cell check, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Brent Michael Perucca was discovered in medical distress at approximately 4:30 p.m. Custody and nursing staff attempted to render medical aid and perform CPR. Paramedics later arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Perucca had been arrested by San Luis Obispo police on May 23 at approximately 12:40 p.m. Before being booked into jail, he was taken to the hospital for medical clearance due to chronic long-term health issues. He remained at the hospital for several hours, where he received extensive testing and examination. He was then booked into County Jail at approximately 6 p.m.

Upon arrival at the jail, medical staff screened Perucca and continued treatment related to his existing health conditions. Authorities noted he had a long history of being booked into the jail, with more than 20 prior instances.

An autopsy was performed the morning after his death, and results are pending. Officials said no foul play is suspected.

Next of kin has been notified. No further information is available at this time.
