Update: Name released for man who died in county jail
Update March 25: An inmate at the San Luis Obispo County Jail was discovered unconscious on Tuesday in a single-person cell, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office has notified the next of kin of the inmate, as a result, they can now identify the man as 33-year-old Sean Michael Alexander of Pismo Beach.
An autopsy is being conducted today. The autopsy report will be pending toxicology results which are expected in six to eight weeks. For further information on in-custody deaths, the sheriff’s office has provided a resource for the public on our website, www.slosheriff.org.
Original story March 24: Correctional deputies reported that they had earlier observed the inmate voluntarily getting into a kneeling position over his bed. His movements and behavior inside the cell were reportedly normal and there was no indication the inmate was in any distress.
While the inmate was housed in the cell, correctional deputies performed regular checks once every 30 minutes to ensure the health and welfare of the inmate. While still in the kneeling position, the inmate appeared to lay his head down on his bed. When correctional deputies checked on him, he was unresponsive. Correctional deputies immediately began life saving measures and the inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, according to the sheriff’s office.
The inmate was brought into the jail on March 18 on a probation violation and for the use of, and being under the influence of, a controlled substance. The inmate was housed in a cell that is under video surveillance at all times. As part of the investigative process, detectives are reviewing that video. No foul play is suspected, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation is continuing.
