Incumbents lead in Atascadero City Council elections

– Incumbent Atascadero councilmembers Heather Newsom and Susan Funk are in the lead against challenger Bret Heinemann. Election results posted at 1 a.m. this morning show Newsom as the top vote-getter with 43.4%, followed by Funk with 42.9%, with Heinemann in third at 13%.

The candidates are competing for two four-year seats. Funk and Newsom were both elected in 2018.

Mayor Heather Moreno and treasurer Gere Sibbach ran unopposed. Moreno, a registered Republican, joined the Atascadero City Council as a council member in 2014 and was first elected mayor in 2018 before being reelected mayor during the 2020 election.

Supervisor Debbie Arnold watches results come in at the Republican Headquarters in Atascadero.

The San Luis Obispo County District 2 Supervisor election results show Bruce Gibson in the lead with 52.79% of the vote and Bruce Jones with 47.2% with 100% of precincts reporting.

District 2 was redrawn within the past year and now includes Cayucos, Harmony, Cambria, San Simeon, Atascadero, San Miguel, and the neighborhoods surrounding Lake Nacimiento. The boundaries previously included Los Osos, Morro Bay, and parts of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly.

In the Atascadero School Board race, the top four leading candidates for the four open seats are:

  • Tracy Ellis-Weit with 15.44% of the vote
  • Vy Pierce with 14.58% of the vote
  • Rebekah Koznek with 11.97% of the vote
  • Denise McGrew Kane with 11.80% of the vote

Republican Headquarters in Atascadero filled with candidates, supporters, and interested voters Tuesday night to watch election results. Among those who attended were District Attorney Dan Dow, Dr. Bruce Jones, Supervisor Debbie Arnold, Paso Robles Mayoral candidate Michael Rivera, Assembly candidate Vicki Nohrden and numerous school board candidates for Atascadero, Templeton, and Paso Robles School Districts. Most people left long before the final count was released early Wednesday morning.

Ballot counting continues at the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s office.
