Hospice hosting volunteer training in Atascadero
Compassionate community members wanted
– Hospice of San Luis Obispo County is seeking volunteers for their volunteer training program for in-home volunteers who will provide assistance to individuals coping with a life-limiting illness. The training will take place on July 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5 and 12 at Father’s House church in Atascadero.
Participants of all ages are welcome and requirements include compassion, open-mindedness, a healthy perspective on grief and loss, sensitivity to others, and a commitment of up to four hours per week for six months.
Volunteering with Hospice offers participants a unique opportunity to care for others in a non-traditional sense. Sometimes all that is needed is someone to talk to. As an in-home volunteer, participants will provide companionship, respite care, transportation, emotional support, practical assistance and comfort.
“My family benefited so much from Hospice SLO in preparing us for my husband’s death and helping to normalize and honor the overwhelming process. I felt very motivated to become a hospice volunteer after my husband died,” a volunteer said. “I completed the volunteer training class and was honored to take on my first client. I have had three clients over the last year and a half and have really enjoyed working with them all.”
Volunteer training will take place on Fridays starting July 15 and continue through August 12 at Father’s House church located at 2100 Ramona Road in Atascadero. Training times are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 15, 22 and 29 and from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 12.
To register for the volunteer training, call Hospice SLO County at (805) 544-2266 or email Erica Garcia at [email protected].
