Highway 101 full closure in Montecito planned until Monday
– Both directions of US 101 remain closed from the junction of State Route 126 in Ventura County to Milpas Street in Santa Barbara County due to mudslides, so motorists are advised to use the I-5 as an alternate route.
Water, mud and debris continue to move, hampering Caltrans progress in clearing US 101. The creeks and exit paths for water are clogged due to downstream blockages and much of the water is not dissipating and receding as hoped. Additionally, the US 101 area remains a disaster rescue and recovery zone.
“We are working with other agencies to remove blockages and restore US Highway 101. We are also coordinating with agencies to aid in rescues and provide a pathway through”, stated Sara von Schwind, Caltrans District 5 Deputy District Director of Maintenance and Operations.
Our current estimate for opening the highway has changed and we are now expecting to open US 101 by midday on Monday, January 15, 2018.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through
highway construction zones.
