High schools host student ‘just one’ job fair
The “Just 1” event was held in the Atascadero High School Library.
Program encourages local businesses to hire students for the summer
–Through a partnership between local chambers of commerce, San Luis Obispo county high schools and San Luis Obispo Partners in Education or SLOPE, the “Just 1” program reaches out to businesses, asking them to hire “Just 1” student for the summer. After a successful pilot program in Paso Robles in 2015, the Just 1 program returned this year and now includes 7 county high schools in 4 summer job fairs. Atascadero and Paso Robles High Schools were two schools that participated in the recent program.
Last year, 34 businesses participated in the Paso Robles High School Just 1 summer job fair with 80 students hired. This year, 81 employers participated, and more than 300 students from 7 high schools came to find summer employment.
“These kids are the future,” said event founder Pam Avila. “This program is a great way to get them started and get them interested in different industries.”
Atascadero High School Principal Bill Neely said that the program is a great way to help teach kids real life skills such as how to make a resume and how to present themselves during an interview. “It’s a powerful opportunity for our kids,” he said. Neely said that next year, the high school may combine the Just 1 program with their job fair.
