Mixed results lead to great experience for local robotics team
–Atascadero High School Greybots recently attended the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, after winning at the FIRST Ventura Regional competition on Mar. 26, 2016. The Greybots, a team of 19 robotics students, 12 college students and adult mentors performed well with the team receiving mixed results.
The Greybots attended the event alongside two other teams The Beach Bots from Hermosa Beach and Circuit of Life from Ventura, the event was hosted by the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) organization.
Greybots Coordinator Jan Price said during the challenge entitled “FIRST Stronghold”, the robot “Avalanche” had to cross a wide variety of defense game pieces and score a foam ball into a medieval castle. “Our championship experience was interesting with very mixed results,” she said. “At the end of the qualifying matches, the Greybots finished 10-0 and were ranked first. While our robot continued to function extremely well, our alliance partners had difficulties and we were eliminated in the semi-finals. The team came in with a strong confidence that we would win our division and compete again on the Einstein play-off field, but that was not the case.” Price said going to the championship was a fantastic experience and the students, particularly the 10 rookies, had a blast. The team will celebrate at their Award BBQ this weekend.

The Greybots, an independent program founded in 2002 by Atascadero High School’s physics teacher, John Miron, and a small group of high school students, has become increasingly successful. This year’s team consisted of 15 students from Atascadero High School, two from San Luis Obispo High School, one from the San Luis Obispo Classical Academy and one from Santa Lucia Middle School.
The Greybots aim to encourage science, technology, engineering, and math education by creating a hands-on, project-based, educational environment for students.
