Four arrests made at St. Fratty's Day celebration

Street party ‘had major impacts on the neighborhood’ said police

– On Saturday, March 15, the San Luis Obispo Police Department, alongside 23 allied agencies, staged personnel in neighborhoods adjacent to the Cal Poly University campus in response to the “St. Fratty’s Day” celebration. The street party, which has grown significantly over the past years, had major impacts on the neighborhood, including property damage, personal injuries, and illegal behavior.

In January 2024, the safety enhancement zone for St. Patrick’s Day was amended to include the two weekends prior to March 17. During the safety enhancement zone, administrative fines for noise, unruly gatherings, open containers, and public urination are doubled, ranging from $700 to $1,000. The zone for this year is in effect from March 7-10 and March 14-18.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department and allied agencies took a “zero tolerance” approach, not allowing people to gather in the roadway and immediately addressing illegal behavior as it occurred. There was a large number of people throughout the neighborhoods, but no gatherings were permitted, and roadways and sidewalks were kept clear.

Four arrests were made, all for misdemeanor public intoxication (PC 647(f)), which was fewer than expected, according to police. Citation and arrest information for the entire safety enhancement zone will be provided at the conclusion of the zone.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department thanked the support of City leadership and departments during the weekend, including San Luis Obispo City Fire, Information Technology, Public Works – Parking Services, Public Works – Streets, and Parks and Recreation. The department also expressed gratitude to Cal Poly University and Cal Poly Police Department for their partnership, the creation of the on-campus alternative event, and their management of students in campus housing.
