Fireworks illegal in Atascadero

–Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services are urging Atascadero residents to observe a safe, legal and fire-free holiday. Due to the drought conditions, high temperatures, low humidity and the threat of fire, we must all do our part to be fire safe.

Residents are advised that all fireworks are illegal in the City of Atascadero and Officials warn that anyone caught lighting or possessing even “safe and sane” fireworks in the city will be cited and fined.

Misdemeanor violations are punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment. In addition, anyone found responsible for setting a fire using any type of fireworks will be responsible to pay for property damage, suppression costs and may be charged with a felony. This liability also applies to parents of juveniles found responsible for causing a fire.

According to statistics published by the Consumer Product Safety Commissioner’s (CPSC’s) 2015 Fireworks Annual Report,

More than one-quarter (28-percent) of fires started by fireworks in 2009-2013 were reported on Independence Day. Almost half (47-percent) of the reported fires on the Fourth of July were started by fireworks.

According to the CPSC, more than one-third (35-percent) of the people seen in emergency rooms for fireworks injuries from June 20-July 20, 2014 were under 15; nine percent were under five.
CPSC data show that sparklers alone accounted for more than one one-quarter (28-percent) of the emergency room fireworks injuries seen from June 20-July 20, 2014.

The opportunity to observe fireworks displays in a safe manner will be available at some of the surrounding communities. Please check with them for times.

Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services wishes the community a memorable 4th of July and requests a common sense, safe celebration. We further encourage anyone possessing fireworks to turn them in to their local fire department, without fear of penalty or prosecution, so that they may be safely disposed of.

For additional information or assistance, please contact the Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services at (805) 461-5070 or your local fire agency.
