A mobile home on Bienvenida Court in Rancho Del Bordo Mobile Home Park in South Atascadero caught on fire Saturday around 11:30 a.m. Neighbors said they heard a couple of loud pops that sounded like gun fire. Atascadero City Fire Department Cpt. Tom Peterson said the cause has not been determined.

Peterson said that the mobile home had been fully engulfed by the fire and two homes were threatened, but fire crews from Atascadero, Templeton and Paso Robles were able to contain it before it spread. Peterson said that the mobile home’s occupant may have sustained mild burns.

While only one home sustained fire damage, the fire did spread to the vegetation behind it, where Peterson said there was natural gas venting. The fire caused a natural gas main to shear and burn. A Gas Company crew was on-site to shut off the gas. Atascadero Fire Cpt. Bill White said Gas Company personnel had to dig up the roadway to access the gas line to shut it off.

“It’s contained, it’s not extinguished. The spread has stopped,” Peterson said just after noon.

The fire was contained in 45 minutes with two engines and two command vehicles from Atascadero City Fire Department, two engines and one command vehicle from CALFire, one engine from Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services, one breathing support unit from Templeton Fire, one ambulance from San Luis Ambulance and four Atascadero Police unites for traffic control and evacuations. A total of 28 firefighters responded to the fire. White said that not only did the firefighters have the fire to content with, but also the 95-degree weather.

White reminds Atascadero residents to complete their weed abatement to prevent large fire growth.
