Fatal crash near Cambria claims life of teen driver

A fatal hit-and-run collision is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) after a crash was reported on Sept. 15, southbound on State Route 1, north of Burton Drive in Cambria.
According to the CHP report, Eric Aguilar, 16, of San Simeon, reportedly left his home on Saturday, Sept. 14, sometime after 8 p.m. He was driving his father’s 2019 Ford F-150 truck. The family did not know Aguilar’s destination and later began searching for him and the vehicle but was unable to locate either.
At around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, reports were made to 9-1-1 about a possible vehicle off the side of State Route 1. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, family members were already present and had located the vehicle and the sole occupant, Aguilar. The truck had left the roadway, hitting several trees, which caused significant damage to the vehicle and fatal injuries to Aguilar. The vehicle was found approximately 100 feet down an embankment and was not visible from the roadway.
Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, though it is unclear if alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving contributed, says CHP.

This collision is pending further investigation.
