Fall is ‘celebration season’ in North County

The fall season is also the “celebration season” in the North County. Both Atascadero and Paso Robles hold their signature heritage events, Colony Days and Pioneer Day. It is a wonderful time for the community to come together and both celebrations have several events leading up to the town parade.
This year Atascadero Colony Days was amazing. My hat goes off to the organizing committee and all those that worked so hard to organize all the special events. Congratulations to Bonne and Jack Scott for being named Colony Days King and Queen, and for all of their accomplishments over the many years.
Again this year, the Colony Days celebration was a big success. Tent City, the Dogtoberfest Weiner Dog Races, and the parade brought lots of smiles to all and provided fun for the whole family. People of all ages enjoyed the many activities in the park, and I especially enjoyed watching the children explore the tent city area, a reenactment of the early Atascadero Days.
Recently the Board of Supervisors received the 2018-19 Annual Report for the County, summarizing last year’s fiscal achievements. Some key accomplishments included the Fleet Division of the County being named as one of 50 fleet teams in the nation to receive the “Leading Fleets of 2019” award from the American Public Works Association.
The Fleet Division of our county maintains over 770 county vehicles that provide services to this county. The fleet includes sheriff’s vehicles, construction equipment, and specialized vehicles. Another notable achievement by the County Fire Department was training 215 County Firefighters/EMTs to provide a higher standard of care to give lifesaving treatment that previously required waiting for a paramedic. These treatments include using Epinephrine during allergic reactions, using Narcan for treating drug overdoses, using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure for respiratory distress, and treating diabetic emergencies with blood glucose monitoring.
The county also expanded mental health services by increasing service at the new Crisis Stabilization Unit and providing mental health professionals in some local emergency rooms.
