Election Day 2016 is just around the corner
By Atascadero City Clerk Marcia McClure Torgerson
Deadline for voter registration is Oct. 24
The next General Municipal Election for the City of Atascadero will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016. In addition to the very important national, state and regional political offices and issues under consideration, registered voters in Atascadero will have the opportunity to vote for a mayor with a two year term, along with two city council members with four year terms.
Atascadero voters will also be considering whether or not the city clerk and city treasurer positions should be appointed rather than elected. Among San Luis Obispo County cities, only Atascadero and Paso Robles still have elected clerks and treasurers; the other cities in the county now have appointed clerks and treasurers.
The deadline for voter registration is 15 days before Election Day or by Oct. 24, in order to be eligible to vote in the current election. Voter registration can be completed online at http://www.slocounty.ca.gov/clerk/elections/voterregistration.htm. If you are a US citizen and will be 18 years of age on election day, you can vote.
Some Atascadero residents may think that their single vote doesn’t really matter, so they don’t bother to vote. It’s very important for everyone to realize that the outcome of many elections have been ultimately determined by a very small number of votes, and the belief that each individual vote doesn’t matter couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone is urged to get out and vote because every vote does count!
