Dye your own silk scarf with local artist at Art Center Morro Bay
Workshop slated for May 20
– The Morro Bay Art Association is offering a unique workshop, “Dyeing Silk Scarves with Sharon Gellerman,” featuring the work of local artist Sharon Gellerman. Gellerman creates hand-marbled, silk scarves and silk tallits with a modern interpretation of the classical art of marbling on fabric.
Gellerman’s intricate patterns and vibrant colors are greatly influenced by her memories of Israel and her love of the California Coast. Her scarves and tallits are unique, wearable pieces of art.
The process of marbling silk scarves involves layering colorful dyes onto a solution of water and cellulose, allowing the dyes to float above the liquid. The layers of color are then manipulated into unique designs using custom made combs or rakes. When the fabric is placed on top of the composition and absorbs the dye colors, it transfers onto the silk scarf, creating a marbling effect.
The workshop will take place on May 20, from 1-4 p.m. at Art Center Morro Bay, located at 835 Main Street. The cost is $65 for members and $75 for non-members. Pre-registration is required. Click here to register.
