Driver strikes large bear near Santa Margarita
Driver uninjured in accident
–At around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, California Highway Patrol, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff, Atascadero Fire, Santa Margarita Fire and San Luis Ambulance responded to an overturned car in the southbound lane of Highway 101 North of Highway 58. The driver had struck a 400 pound bear, killing it on impact, SLO Stringer reports. The driver was uninjured.
Deputies moved the bear to the shoulder of the freeway and Caltrans later disposed of it.
Bear strikes do sometimes occur along the 101 in the county, however most responders on the scene that evening could not remember such a large bear falling victim to a vehicle, the report said.
