Dive into history at the library
–“Live at the Library” will be bringing author of the adventure dive book “Bubbles Up” and “The Universe Next Door,” Judith Hemenway, on Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. to the Atascadero Library in the Martin Polin Community Room.
Hemenway, an author and diving enthusiast, will narrate a visual history of James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific,” as well as explore WWII military battles and activities through a lively presentation featuring photos of her numerous dives in the South Pacific.
As a young child, Hemenway says that she was afraid of the water until the fateful day her father picked her up and threw her, water wings and all, into the deep end of the pool. She immediately realized she had found her true element and hasn’t come out of the water since, except grudgingly to earn enough money to support her scuba diving habit.
Since then, she has completed roughly 1,500 dives, ranging from her home waters in California to such exotic locations as: Cozumel and the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean; Mexico’s Sea of Cortez and the Baja lagoons San Ignacio and Ojo de Liebre; the Melanesian island nations Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomons; the Polynesian Kingdom of Tonga; Malaysian Borneo; and most recently, the Indonesian island Sulawesi. Take the plunge with Hemenway as she travels the world’s oceans.
In a recent interview, Hemenway said, “Whether you are a diver, snorkeler, or simply an ocean lover rejuvenated by a beach stroll or a swim in the surf, you will enjoy immersing yourself in these fascinating stories.”
Presented by the Atascadero Library and the Friends of the Atascadero Library and sponsored by a grant from Sally G. Knight.
The Atascadero Library is located at 6555 Capistrano Ave., Atascadero, Ca. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (805) 461-6165.
