Disaster preparedness course offered in Atascadero 

20-hour course is open to individuals age 15 and older.

– The North San Luis Obispo County Community Emergency Response Team will offer a basic training course in disaster preparedness, response and recovery. The 20-hour course is open to individuals age 15 and older.

The course covers disaster preparation, the structure and function of the emergency response team, basic first aid, the psychology of disaster, small fire suppression, structure search and victim rescue, and information on terrorism and hazardous materials.

Classes will be held at the Colony Park Community Center, located at 5599 Traffic Way in Atascadero. Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, April 29; Thursday, May 1; Tuesday, May 6; and Thursday, May 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. A final session, which includes a review and disaster exercise, will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to about 5 p.m.

Participants must attend all training sessions to complete the course and receive a certificate. The cost is $40 per person or family.

Online registration is available at Atascadero.org under “Activities & Recreation” by selecting “Register for a Class or Activity.” In-person registration is available at the Colony Park Community Center front desk during customer service hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
