Diablo power plant to host safety information meeting 

– There will be a special informational town hall meeting held at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power plant on Friday. The public is invited to attend. The topic of discussion will be seismic safety of the plant. Many elected officials will be attending, including Senator William Monning (D-Carmel), San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Bruce Gibson and San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Adam Hill.Diablo Canyon

The meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a opening remarks by Senator Monning and a video presentation by Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara).

“Safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant,” said Monning. “The Town Hall meeting this Friday will provide an overview of the ongoing seismic evaluations to regional elected officials and the public. We want to listen to both the experts and the community about the seismic safety issues on and surrounding Diablo Canyon.”

There will be 15 minute presentations by different representatives from various agencies and organizations. Pacific Gas and Electric Director of Technical Services Jearl Strickland, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Senior Level Advisor Brittain Hill, California Geological Survey Supervising Engineering Geologist Chris Wills, California Public Utilities Commission Energy Division Manager of Market Structure Costs and Natural Gas Gurbux Kahlon, and Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility Outreach Coordinator David Weisman will all present beginning at 4 p.m.

At 5:30 p.m. the meeting will open to public comment. Members of the public will have an opportunity to express their opinions about the seismic safety of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant

Public comment is limited to three minutes per person and will be strictly enforced. If time does not permit for all those who want to publicly comment, written comments will be accepted.

“There is broad based support for ensuring that there are sound regulations and policies in place to guard against seismic hazards at Diablo Canyon, and I am pleased to be able to help facilitate respectful engagement and discussion on this important issue,” said Monning.
