County Grand Jury issues annual continuity report

ca_state_seal08Grand Jury also opens applications for 2017-2018 jurors

–The 2016-2017 San Luis Obispo Grand Jury issued its annual report that recaps official public responses to reports issued in the prior year. It also announced that applications to serve on the next grand jury are now being accepted.

In its annual continuity report, the San Luis Obispo Grand Jury reviewed responses from county and city governments to last year’s report on policies and training related to setting bail by local law enforcement. As a whole, agencies either stated that they were already doing what the report recommended or disagreed with the need to make further changes. The continuity report also covered responses from last year’s report on minor use permits and the county’s process for issuing them. Overall the county’s Planning and Building Department responded that the recommendations would not be implemented, describing them as not warranted and not reasonable. The Board of Supervisors also adopted the department’s response.

Under California law, agencies must respond to the findings and recommendations of county grand juries and indicate whether or not they intend to implement the recommendations. Full text of all reports and replies can be found on the Grand Jury web site. Grand juries in California provide citizen oversight of local governmental agencies, such as cities, counties and special districts. The San Luis Obispo Grand Jury is composed of 19 volunteers who typically serve for one year. Anyone interested in serving on the next Grand Jury which starts July 1 must submit an application by April 27.
