City to celebrate Arbor Day by planting a native tree
California Arbor Week celebrated March 7-14
–This year the City of Atascadero and the Atascadero Native Tree Association will celebrate Arbor Day on Tuesday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at the Atascadero Lake Park. Atascadero has been recognized as a “Tree City” for 27 years, and the city will mark this distinction on Arbor Day by planting a native tree.
The tree will be planted at Atascadero Lake Park in a location close to the horseshoe pit area. The native tree association is donating a Valley Oak tree from Bay Laurel Garden Center and city staff will assist with the planting.
The Atascadero Native Tree Association is a community based volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of Atascadero’s native trees. The city and the association have worked together over the years planting hundreds of native tree seedlings on city property and open space areas.
Arbor Day began in the United States in Nebraska in 1854. It was created by Julius Sterling Morton from Detroit who had a love for nature and agriculture. Shortly after, all fifty states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day, and California established Arbor Week March 7-14 of each year. This annual observance celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. Across the state, cities designate a day during this week as Arbor Day, planting trees and sharing information about proper tree care and the value of trees.
