City highlights economic development and business opportunities in Atascadero

City of atascadero

– The City of Atascadero reports continued economic development efforts and new commercial opportunities as it works to support business growth and future development.

City officials said Atascadero’s location along Highway 101 provides visibility and accessibility for an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles traveling the corridor each day.

The city said its General Plan 2045 outlines a long-term vision for development, infrastructure investment, and economic activity. Officials are also working to adopt an updated zoning code intended to streamline approvals, reduce processing times, and establish clearer pathways for commercial and mixed-use development.

Atascadero has a population of about 30,000 residents and serves a North San Luis Obispo County trade area with more than 60,000 residents within a 15-minute drive, according to the city. San Luis Obispo County has more than 280,000 residents and a tourism economy that city officials said supports retail and service demand.

“Atascadero is transforming,” said Mayor Charles Bourbeau. “The City is financially stable and well managed, as underscored by recent bond ratings. Additionally, we have invested millions in enhancing the downtown area with ample free parking and improving roads and public facilities across the community. The City Council is stable, consistently welcoming to investment, and committed to policies that make Atascadero an easy place to do business.”

City officials also highlighted development activity in the Del Rio Marketplace area, where recent lease commitments include Central Coast Distillery, Anna and Co. Boutique, and The Learning Experience Childcare Center.

Additional restaurants and mixed-use buildings with residential space above retail are planned for the area, according to the city. Available spaces and leasing opportunities are listed on the city’s website at atascadero.org/economic-development#Programs.

City officials also noted several projects and businesses planned or underway in the downtown area, including the Centennial Plaza Project and the La Moda development. New restaurants and retailers expected to open include Garden City Market, Momotaro Ramen, Beachin’ Biscuits, Wendy White’s Bakery, The Golden Fox Restaurant, The Golden Goose Sports Bar, and Mabel Lounge at the renovated Carlton Hotel.

The city said additional commercial and mixed-use development is planned for the north and south areas of Atascadero.
