Last year’s enforcement period resulted in 1,047 arrests for driving under the influence, 27 fatal crashes

– As millions of motorists prepare for holiday travel, the California Highway Patrol is preparing to launch its annual Thanksgiving maximum enforcement period. The enforcement period will begin at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and run through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1.

During this time, CHP officers statewide will patrol the highways to promote safe driving and ensure seat belts are in use.

“Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness, and our mission is to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “We encourage everyone to prepare their vehicles for travel, leave early to account for heavy traffic, buckle up, and never drive impaired. The well-being and safety of others starts with making good decisions behind the wheel.”

Last year’s Thanksgiving enforcement period resulted in 1,047 arrests for driving under the influence and 27 fatal crashes within CHP jurisdiction. Five of the 17 vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts. These statistics underscore the importance of making smart, safe decisions while driving.

The CHP urges all drivers to buckle up, drive sober, avoid speeding, and stay distraction-free throughout the holiday weekend.
