Original story posted Sept. 24

The Atascadero Unified School District announced Thursday that it has received preliminary results from the environmental sampling for the main portion of campus, both interior and exterior, from the laboratory. No harmful chemicals have been detected at San Gabriel Elementary School.

AUSD is still waiting for the results from a few remaining samples. This information, combined with the fact that law enforcement has stated, “At this time there is no known ongoing threat to the safety of our students or staff,” has allowed AUSD to begin preparing for a return to campus. However, due to the fact that they are still waiting for the last of the samples, classes and transportation will continue in their temporary locations.

The first steps that are being taken by the Atascadero Unified School District for a well-organized return to campus is a routine cleaning by custodial staff of the San Gabriel Elementary School, the re-keying of all buildings as a precaution, and allowing teachers an opportunity to lesson plan within their own classrooms prior to student arrival.

As well as making the campus return ready, the Atascadero Police Department and the staff of the Atascadero Unified School District will continue to provide around-the-clock monitoring of San Gabriel Elementary School. Upon return to the campus, school counselors will be available to speak with any students, staff, or parents that desire counseling services. District administration will also be available to discuss questions at the site.
