Charles Paddock Zoo earns accreditation for five more years
Mayor and city manager praise zoo team’s dedication to wildlife
– The Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero has earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for another five years. The accreditation was announced by the association on Wednesday, March 26, after a rigorous review process.
An open house celebration will be held Sunday, April 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission will be free from 3 to 4 p.m., with festivities continuing in the zoo’s garden event center until 5 p.m.
“Congratulations to the leadership and staff at the Charles Paddock Zoo for attaining the global gold standard in zoological and aquarium accreditation,” said Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the association. “The Charles Paddock Zoo has demonstrated a dedication to this exceptional level of care.”
The accreditation process included a detailed application and multiple-day inspection evaluating animal care, veterinary programs, staff training, education programs, conservation efforts and financial stability. Facilities must complete this process every five years.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this accreditation,” said Mayor Charles Bourbeau. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.”
City Manager Jim Lewis said: “This distinction underscores our city’s commitment to world-class animal care, education and conservation efforts.”
“Only 10% of zoos across the world meet these standards, and the Charles Paddock Zoo is one of them,” said Zoo Director Cynthia Stringfield.
The zoo is home to over 300 animals, including red pandas, monkeys, and a Malayan tiger. It is located at Atascadero Lake Park on Highway 41. For more information, visit the zoo’s website or call (805) 461-5080.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, founded in 1924, accredits top zoos and aquariums in the U.S. and 12 other countries.
