Attendees will explore threats to democracy through discussion and video

– A free, nonpartisan community workshop titled “What Is Happening to Our Country? What Can I Do?” will take place Sunday, Oct. 26, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the Atascadero Lake Pavilion, 9315 Pismo Avenue.

The event is organized by the Indivisible Rapid Response Team SLOC and is open to residents interested in learning more about civic engagement and non-violent activism.

Organizers say the workshop is designed for people new to activism who are concerned about the direction of the country and want to learn constructive ways to respond.

Participants will hear from Cal Poly philosophy professor Ryan Jenkins, who will speak on the history and characteristics of fascism in America, and Jane Lehr, professor of Ethnic and Women’s, Gender & Queer Studies, who will discuss attacks on free speech at universities.

Attendees will also watch video clips from nationally recognized authorities on non-violent civic resistance, take part in group discussions, and create a personal action plan.

The event is free, but registration is encouraged. Participants can register online at https://www.mobilize.us/indivisiblerapidresponseteamslo/event/856147/.
