Atascadero Police to increase patrols during Super Bowl weekend

Police encourage designated drivers and rideshare use
– As football fans prepare for Super Bowl celebrations, the Atascadero Police Department is reminding the public to plan ahead for a sober ride home.
Whether hosting a party, attending a gathering, or watching the game elsewhere, police said making transportation plans in advance helps keep everyone on the road safe.
“Super Bowl celebrations are a time for fun and community, but safety should always come first,” Commander Matt Chesson said. “If you plan to drink, make sure you have a reliable way to get home, whether that’s a designated sober driver, rideshare, taxi, or public transportation.”
During Super Bowl LIX weekend on Feb. 7 and 8, the Atascadero Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Police encouraged residents to plan ahead by choosing a designated sober driver who will remain alcohol-free, using ridesharing services, taxis, or public transportation as alternatives to driving, and hosting responsibly by offering non-alcoholic beverage options and ensuring guests have safe rides home. Officers also urged people to look out for friends and family by preventing impaired individuals from driving and helping arrange a safe ride. Police said drivers should never operate a vehicle while impaired or distracted.
Officials noted that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances can also affect a person’s ability to drive. Anyone who plans to drink or take medications with a driving warning label should arrange for a sober driver. Police advised calling 9-1-1 if someone appears to be driving while impaired.
Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
