Atascadero honors fallen service members at Faces of Freedom Memorial

– Community members gathered at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial on Monday for a Memorial Day ceremony honoring United States service members who died in the line of duty.
The event featured a flyover by Estrella Warbirds, a color guard presentation by Cal Poly Reserve Officers’ Training Corps with musical support from the Central Coast Pipes and Drums, and a flag line hosted by Welcome Home Military Heroes.
County Supervisor Heather Moreno attended the ceremony and reflected on its meaning.
“Today in Atascadero, we gathered at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial for a moving Memorial Day ceremony, a time of remembrance, reflection, and deep gratitude,” Moreno said.
Lieutenant Colonel Melissa Hughes, representing the Women Airforce Service Pilots, delivered the keynote address. Hughes spoke about the contributions of the pioneering women pilots during World War II and shared stories about their service.
“LTC Melissa Hughes shared the legacy of the Women Airforce Service Pilots and grace reminded us of the courage and sacrifice behind the freedoms we enjoy,” Moreno said.
A memorial wreath was laid in honor of Dan Phillips, also known locally as “Barber Dan.” Organizers described Phillips as a community figure whose service and memory continue to impact Atascadero.
The Kiwanis Club of Atascadero hosted a community barbecue following the ceremony. Attendees were encouraged to bring their own chairs due to limited seating at the event.
“We honored those who gave everything for our country and our freedoms through music, fellowship, and the traditional wreath presentation,” Moreno said.
