Atascadero Greyhounds lose to Newbury Park, 40-7
–The Atascadero Greyhounds lost at Newbury Park 40-7 Friday night.
Both team opened their season with lopsided wins. Atascadero beat Torres of Madera 35-0. Newbury Park clobbered Crescenta Valley 42-0.
Friday night, Newbury Park scored first, taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Greyhounds tied the game with a touchdown pass early in the second quarter.
But after that touchdown, Newbury Park dominated.
The Panthers scored 19 unanswered points in the second quarter, then added a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Although they forced several turnovers, the Greyhounds did not score again. In the first half Atascadero recovered a fumble and intercepted two passes.
Early in the third quarter, the Greyhounds drove to Newbury Park’s 6-yard line. The Greyhounds could not move the ball into the end zone. An attempted field goal was blocked. The Greyhounds recovered another fumble in the fourth quarter, but did not capitalize on the turnover.
The Panthers ran for a final touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the score 40-7.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 2-0. The Greyhounds drop to 1-1 for the season.
Atascadero will host North Salinas (0-1) on September 10th. The North Salinas Vikings lost their opener to Alisal (Salinas) 41-7 on August 27th. The Vikings had a bye September 3rd.
The Greyhounds travel to Paso Robles (1-1) on September 17th. That rivalry game is no longer their final game of the season because the teams are now in different leagues.
