Atascadero Fire Department shares wildfire preparedness, safety measures
With recent fires impacting Southern California, the department has received increased inquiries about preparedness, prevention
– The Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services Department has outlined safety precautions and resources to help residents prepare for potential wildfires. With recent fires impacting Southern California, the department has received increased inquiries about emergency preparedness and wildfire prevention, according to a press release.
The fire department continuously inspects and maintains fire equipment and engines, collaborates with the Atascadero Mutual Water Company to ensure reliable water storage and hydrant systems, and tests fire hydrants and generators to maintain readiness.
Ongoing training for fire personnel is conducted throughout the year, and community preparation is supported through the Community Wildfire Prevention Plan, Emergency Plan, and Vegetation Management Plan.
Efforts to reduce wildfire risks include fuel management programs such as annual chipping, weed abatement inspections, and designated burn days. Burn days are currently restricted due to forecasted high winds. The department also offers consultations to evaluate a property’s defensible space and provide recommendations to protect residences during wildfires.
During an active fire, the fire department works with the police department and public works to clear roadways of debris, including downed trees and electrical lines, and evacuate unsafe areas.
Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to prepare for wildfires:
- Defensible space and home hardening: Creating defensible space around homes and implementing fire-resistant landscaping can reduce fire risks. The department provides resources on designing fire-safe landscapes and hardening homes.
- Stay informed and know your zone: Clearly mark home addresses for easy identification during emergencies. Residents should know their evacuation zones and download relevant apps to stay updated on evacuation areas.
- Create an emergency kit: Assemble a kit with food, water, and essential supplies in advance, as last-minute purchases may not be possible.
- Plan for power outages: Atascadero does not have fuel stations equipped with backup generators. Residents should keep vehicle fuel tanks above half and safely store fuel for generators. Consider alternative fuel sources, such as natural gas or propane, for generator purchases.
- Establish communication alternatives: Prolonged power outages may affect cell tower backup systems, potentially disrupting communication after 48 hours. Include an AM/FM radio and extra batteries in emergency kits.
