– The Atascadero Community Band is set to take center stage with the world premiere performance of “Tent City Rag,” a musical creation gifted by local composer H. Jack Dexter. The “Around the World in 80 Notes” concert, featuring this composition, is scheduled to entertain audiences on Oct. 29, at Atascadero Bible Church.

“Tent City Rag” pays homage to Atascadero’s history and landmarks, acknowledging the town’s roots, including its former Tent City, with a ragtime section. Listeners will discern echoes of moments spent at some of the town’s landmarks, woven into the composition. The musical piece serves as a reminder of Atascadero’s appeal to its residents.

H. Jack Dexter, a local resident and composer, dedicated “Tent City Rag” to the band as a token of his appreciation for their musicianship and dedication to the community. Although he does not consider himself a professional composer, his lifelong passion for music is evident through his career as a piano technician, composition work, and participation in recorder groups throughout his life.

The premiere performance promises to celebrate the band’s legacy and Atascadero’s spirit. The band expects to have city leadership, including Mayor Heather Moreno and City Council members, in the audience to commemorate the occasion and consider naming “Tent City Rag” as the Official Song of Atascadero.

“We are honored to receive ‘Tent City Rag’ from H. Jack Dexter,” said Joyce Rabellino, president of the ACB Board of Directors. “This composition captures the essence of our town and its history. It’s a gift to our band and our community, and we can’t wait to share it with our audience in hopes it becomes a lasting legacy.”

The “Around the World in 80 Notes” concert will present a diverse program, taking the audience on a musical journey. From classical compositions to contemporary works, the concert promises an enjoyable auditory experience for all attendees.

The world premiere of “Tent City Rag” is expected to be the highlight of the evening, and the Atascadero Community Band invites both residents and visitors to join them to witness this special performance. The concert begins at 3 p.m., with refreshments provided, and is free of charge, with donations accepted.
