Atascadero City Council votes to develop 1-percent sales tax ballot measure

city of atascadero

Atascadero City Council took another step towards putting a 1-percent sales tax on the November ballot. The council voted last night to direct staff to develop a proposed one-cent sales tax for November’s election.

City Manager Rachelle Rickard explained how only 1-percent of sales tax collected in the city goes to pay for city services. She says the City of Atascadero collects fewer dollars per capita than other local cities.

During the discussion of the proposal, Mayor Pro Tempore Charles Borbeau explained the challenges facing Atascadero. He says, “The community is not poor, but the city is poor.”

After more than an hour of discussion, the council voted unanimously to direct staff to write a proposal to put the 1percent sales tax on November’ ballot. Last night’s council meeting was a virtual meeting. The council, staff, and members of the public called in on their phones to participate.
