Atascadero barn fire spreads to vegetation, kills four horses
Four surrounding structures saved through weed abatement
– A barn fire that spread into surrounding vegetation burned 9 acres and killed four horses Saturday afternoon in Atascadero, according to a press release from the Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services department.
Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services responded to the fire at 8620 San Carlos at approximately 4:55 p.m. Crews found the barn fully involved with flames extending into nearby vegetation.
A coordinated response from local and regional agencies stopped the fire’s forward progress by 5:40 p.m. One barn was destroyed. Four surrounding structures were saved due to weed abatement efforts by nearby residents, according to officials.
Agencies responding included the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, Cal Fire San Luis Obispo, Templeton Fire Department, Paso Robles Fire Department, and Santa Margarita Fire Department. The incident involved nine engines, two hand crews, four chief officers, two dozers, aircraft, three police units, and the Atascadero Police Department commander, totaling 77 fire personnel.
Two property owners self-transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital. No additional injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
