Artist Daisy Patton explores wedding rituals in Cuesta exhibit

Opening reception will include artist talk, live stream

– The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College is presenting Before These Witnesses, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Daisy Patton. The exhibition, which explores themes of memory, identity, and storytelling through various media, will run from Jan. 30 to March 14.

The public is invited to the opening reception on Jan. 30 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event will include an artist talk at 6 p.m. in Room 6304, with a live stream available at bit.ly/daisypatton.

The exhibition examines traditions and symbols associated with love, weddings, and marriage. Patton’s work utilizes photography, painting, embroidery, and sculpture to explore the aesthetic, political, and social dimensions of wedding rituals. Her art raises questions about inclusivity and the narratives surrounding love and commitment while challenging traditional practices through detailed and colorful works featuring straight and queer couples.

The exhibition incorporates photographs dating from the late 19th century to the present, transformed with techniques such as embroidery and embellishment. Sculptural elements enhance the immersive experience, inviting viewers to reflect on how rituals of love and commitment are celebrated, documented, and remembered.

Daisy Patton is a multimedia artist whose work combines photography, painting, and mixed media to explore themes of memory and identity. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Her art has been exhibited in venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and has received multiple awards and grants.

The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is located in Room 7170 on the Cuesta College San Luis Obispo campus. Admission is free. For more information, visit the gallery’s website or call (805) 546-3202. Additional inquiries can be sent to [email protected].
