Adoptable animals arrive in San Luis Obispo after Los Angeles fires

Woods encourages residents to adopt animals to free up additional space at the shelter for more transfers from Los Angeles

– Woods Humane Society has recently transported 32 adoptable dogs and cats from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo to make room in shelters for pets displaced by the recent fires in Los Angeles County. The transfers, conducted in collaboration with Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, aim to support emergency pet rescue efforts.

The animals, which were already available for adoption prior to the fires, were relocated to Woods Humane Society’s San Luis Obispo facility. Many are now available for adoption, including dogs Bear, Bento, Chase, Fenway, Gus Gus, Hansel, Layla, Lola, Scotty, Troy, and Xavier, and cats Arthur, Eric, Jill, Karl, Larry, Lucy, Octave, Sanderson, and Tootie.

Woods CEO Emily L’Heureux highlighted the importance of supporting the shelters in Los Angeles during this crisis. “At this point, the shelters in Los Angeles have communicated that they cannot accept physical donations of pet care items,” L’Heureux said. “Instead, what they need is to transfer their unowned, adoptable pets to make room in their shelters for their emergency response for owned pets. Monetary donations to their shelters will also help them to purchase specific goods and medications to treat injuries, provide advanced medical care, etc.”

Woods encourages local residents to adopt animals to free up additional space at their shelter for more transfers from Los Angeles. “The more space we can make in our shelter at Woods, the more adoptable animals we can pull from LA. This allows those shelters more room to serve the hundreds of pets that have come in after being separated from their owners due to these devastating fires,” L’Heureux said.

For those unable to adopt, Woods suggests supporting its relief efforts by joining the Circle of Compassion, a monthly giving program that enables the organization to respond to emergencies and save animals in critical situations.

Woods Humane Society is located at 875 Oklahoma Ave., San Luis Obispo, and is open daily from noon to 5 p.m., with adoption hours from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.WoodsHumane.org or call (805) 543-9316.
