AAUW of Atascadero awards eleven scholarships to local students
–The Atascadero branch of the American Association of University Women have has awarded scholarships to 11 North County students.
The students either graduated from a north county school or live in the north county. Extra money available this year meant AAUW allotted $22,750 among the eleven students for use at a university, college, or technical school. They are:
- Emily Ford, Belen Olague, Gabriella Diaz, Grace Thayer, and Drew Daner, who are all pursuing degrees in education;
- Maritza Perez is working for a degree in public health;
- Courtney Niemeyer is in a program to become a certified nurse assistant;
- Lana Borges will be a family therapist after completing her course work;
- Sydney Lewis seeks a degree in mechanical engineering;
- Adelaida Brown is a business major working towards a law degree; and
- Maria Contreras is majoring in criminal justice.
AAUW Atascadero awards university, college, or technical school scholarships every Spring. Members of the branch hold fundraisers each year to fund both these scholarships and Tech Trek scholarships for seventh-grade girls to attend a one-week summer Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) residency program at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
