Atascadero police to conduct DUI checkpoint Thursday

Checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location
– The Atascadero Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, and ending at 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the department. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road. Officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the department. Anyone planning to drink, use marijuana, or take medication that might impair the ability to drive safely should stay home or use a ride service, the department said.
A grant from the California Highway Patrol’s Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program funded the checkpoint.
