Two-term councilmember and accountant says she will focus on cost of living, local employers
– Atascadero City Councilmember Heather Newsom has announced she is running for California State Senate District 17 in the 2028 election, according to her campaign.
Newsom, a small business owner, has worked in the accounting and tax profession for more than 22 years, managing a practice that helps individuals and small business owners with financial planning, regulation, and growth, according to the campaign.
“Our communities are facing complex challenges, from the rising cost of living to the burdens placed on our local employers and working families,” Newsom said. “State governance requires practical, ground level solutions. I am running for the State Senate to bring a fiscally responsible, practical voice to Sacramento, one that focuses on real results for the people who live and work right here.”
Newsom was first elected to the Atascadero City Council in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. She has served as mayor pro tem and has represented the city on regional boards handling transit, local government coordination, and finance.
The campaign says Newsom plans to build a districtwide coalition of small business owners, farmers and ranchers, and working families.
“Strong communities are built by working together,” Newsom said. “Whether it is a family trying to make ends meet, a small business trying to keep its doors open, or a farmer working through complex regulatory hurdles, the people of this district deserve a state senator who listens, understands the economy, and works collaboratively to solve problems.”
Newsom holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Metropolitan State University of Denver. She serves as treasurer for the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation, is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and works as a local substitute teacher, according to the campaign.
