Templeton student restores Farmall Cub tractor

Project survives fire, reaches completion

– A Templeton student has completed the restoration of a Farmall Cub tractor after the project was nearly lost in a barn fire earlier this year.

Luke Johnsen, a junior Future Farmers of America student from Templeton who attends Atascadero High School, recently completed the restoration of the tractor after months of work.

The California International Harvester Collectors Foundation awarded Johnsen a $2,000 grant on Jan. 21 to support the restoration project. The grant marked the foundation’s 47th restoration project.

During the restoration, the barn where the work was taking place caught fire. Firefighters and Johnsen rescued the Farmall Cub tractor from the building before it was destroyed.

Johnsen continued the project after the fire, completing welding, sandblasting, and repairs to restore the tractor.

The restoration was completed during the first week of July. The Farmall Cub is now ready for parades, shows, and Chapter 14 events.

In announcing the completion of the project, Roger Lubiens, president of IH Collectors Chapter 14 Inc., said the organization hopes to see the tractor at the next California Antique Equipment Show in Tulare, as well as at other events.
