Prescribed burn planned near Santa Margarita Friday

Child pulled from burning car, two injured after crash Sunday

Residents may see smoke during the planned one-day operation

– Fire crews plan to conduct a prescribed burn Friday on private land southeast of Santa Margarita as part of a vegetation management effort to reduce wildfire risk and improve ecosystem health.

The planned one-day operation is scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. Friday on approximately 17 acres of private land about 5 miles southeast of Santa Margarita on Seven Oaks Way, between Las Pilitas Road and Parkhill Road.

The prescribed burn is part of the vegetation management program conducted by Cal Fire San Luis Obispo in collaboration with private landowners, the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District, and the San Luis Obispo County Community Fire Safe Council.

The operation is designed to reduce the buildup of flammable vegetation that contributes to catastrophic wildfires. According to Cal Fire, the project also supports long-term ecological health by promoting native species and improving biodiversity. The agency said the prescribed burn is part of a proactive, science-based approach to land management.

Fire personnel will remain on site throughout the operation, and crews will conduct the burn only under favorable weather conditions. Smoke may be visible in surrounding areas. Residents are advised not to report the fire unless there is an emergency unrelated to the planned prescribed burn.
