Atascadero reminds residents all fireworks are prohibited

Officials cite wildfire risk and remind residents of fireworks penalties
– As Independence Day approaches, the City of Atascadero and the Atascadero Police Department are reminding residents that the use of any fireworks within the city is prohibited, including Safe and Sane fireworks.
While California law allows the sale and use of Safe and Sane fireworks in certain communities, they may not be discharged anywhere within the City of Atascadero. Residents may legally possess Safe and Sane fireworks purchased in jurisdictions where they are authorized for sale. However, lighting, igniting, discharging, or otherwise using any fireworks within city limits is prohibited.
The city said Atascadero remains vulnerable to wildfire because of dry vegetation, warm temperatures, and seasonal weather conditions. Officials said a single spark from a firework can ignite a vegetation fire, placing homes, businesses, residents, pets, and first responders at risk.
The city has adopted an Illegal Fireworks Social Host Accountability Ordinance that holds individuals accountable for hosting, allowing, possessing, using, or discharging illegal fireworks. The ordinance also allows penalties and cost recovery associated with fireworks-related violations and emergency responses.
Officials encourage residents to attend professionally conducted fireworks displays in neighboring communities and participate in other family-friendly holiday activities.
The city is asking residents to help prevent fires during the Fourth of July holiday. For more information about the city’s fireworks ordinance and frequently asked questions, contact the Atascadero Police Department at (805) 461-5051.
