– Hillel of San Luis Obispo announced that its Executive Director, Lauren Bandari, will receive the inaugural Jewish Heritage Award during a recognition ceremony at the California State Assembly on May 18.
The award, presented in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, honors individuals who have contributed to Jewish life, community leadership, and civic engagement across California. Bandari is the first recipient and is being recognized for her work building a Jewish community at California Polytechnic State University and in the San Luis Obispo region.
Under her leadership, Hillel of San Luis Obispo has expanded student engagement, programming, and community partnerships. The organization has developed programs for Jewish students of different backgrounds and has hosted campus events focused on cultural education and interfaith connection.
Assemblywoman Dawn Addis selected Bandari for the award, citing her leadership and work supporting Jewish life on campus and in the community.
In addition to her role at Hillel, Bandari previously served as Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo Jewish Community Center-Federation and continues to serve on its board of directors.
The ceremony at the State Assembly will include elected officials, community leaders, and advocates recognizing contributions to Jewish life and heritage across California.
“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Bandari. “This award reflects the incredible students, partners, and community members who make Jewish life in San Luis Obispo so dynamic and meaningful. Together, we are building a strong and enduring future.”
