Police arrest man they say tagged local businesses with his band’s name

Suspect reportedly fled after officer attempted detention

– A Grover Beach man was arrested early March 6 after an Atascadero Police Department officer observed a person spray-painting graffiti on the wall of a business in the 5900 block of Entrada Avenue, according to the Atascadero Police Department.

At about 1:30 a.m., an Atascadero Police Department sergeant was patrolling the area when he saw a person who appeared to be spray-painting graffiti on the wall of a local business. When the sergeant attempted to detain the individual to investigate, the suspect ran from the area.

After a search, officers located the suspect hiding behind Malibu Brew in the 5900 block of West Mall.

Michael Josiah Brown, 20, of Grover Beach, was taken into custody without incident.

During the investigation, officers learned Brown had reportedly performed earlier in the evening with a band at a nearby business. Officers also located fresh graffiti at two businesses in the 5900 block of Entrada displaying the band’s name. Police said the graffiti is believed to have been done to promote Brown’s band.

Brown was transported to the San Luis Obispo County Jail and booked on suspicion of felony vandalism and misdemeanor resisting, obstructing, or delaying a peace officer.

The investigation remains open and active as investigators attempt to identify other individuals who may have been involved.

Anyone with information about the incident may contact the Atascadero Police Department at (805) 461-5051.
