Public encouraged to join Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel

30-day application period ends on March 22
– Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel are encouraging community members to apply to join the panel, which provides input on future decommissioning plans and potential uses of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant site.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company is pursuing steps to continue operating the Diablo Canyon Power Plant through 2030 as directed by the state. The utility stated it will continue providing opportunities for community input regarding future decommissioning plans and potential future uses of the site. In keeping with that commitment, the utility and the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel jointly announced that applications are now being accepted to join the panel.
New members are sought for the local, nonregulatory stakeholder group, which has provided community input to the utility since 2018 regarding ongoing decommissioning planning activities. Several positions are subject to appointment or reappointment consistent with the panel’s charter. The 30-day application period ends March 22.
Community members interested in joining the panel can obtain information about how to apply at pge.com/engagementpanel.
Current panel members who are not seeking reappointment, along with one representative from Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the California Public Utilities Commission, will select candidates who broadly reflect diverse stakeholder viewpoints in proximity to the Diablo Canyon Power Plant.
Panel meetings will continue to provide opportunities for members to learn about technical aspects of the decommissioning process and provide input. The meetings will also include opportunities to engage with the utility on potential future uses of the lands surrounding the facility and potential repurposing of its facilities. Public meetings occur throughout the year and are open to the public to receive additional community feedback.
Consistent with the panel’s charter, elected officials, current Pacific Gas and Electric Company employees, and their immediate family members are not eligible for community membership on the panel.
The Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel was created to foster open and frequent dialogue between members of the local community and Pacific Gas and Electric Company on matters related to decommissioning of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant. Panelists are local community members from across the Central Coast selected to broadly represent diverse community viewpoints. The panel meets periodically on matters related to decommissioning and the future use of the facility’s lands and facilities.
