Woods Humane Society waives adoption fees for senior pets in November

Promotion runs through November for dogs and cats age 7 and older

– Woods Humane Society will waive adoption fees for senior pets throughout November as part of its “Senior Pets Rock” promotion in recognition of National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. The promotion applies to dogs and cats age 7 and older and does not include dog license fees.

“Senior Pet Month is a wonderful opportunity to spread awareness about the many great reasons to consider adopting an older dog or cat,” said Woods Chief Executive Officer Emily L’Heureux. “Just like the classic rock tunes we all love, the whole family can appreciate the sweet qualities of a senior pet. They’ve got soul, swagger, and a love for the simple things like snuggles, snacks, and naps.”

Woods reports that senior animals make up about 8 percent of its pet population each year, but they often require significant medical care and remain at the shelter two to three times longer than younger animals.

Two senior dogs currently at Woods include Smiley, an 8-year-old Chihuahua who was treated for dry eye and received a dental procedure, and Tiny, a 12-year-old Yorkie who was treated for dental disease. Tiny is available for adoption, and Smiley will be available soon.

“Thanks to a transformative grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization that is helping us provide adoption veterinary care for senior dogs, and through Woods’ Senior Pets Rock promotion, we are ensuring more older pets in our community will receive the love, comfort, and medical care they need in their golden years,” the organization stated.

Woods shared three reasons to consider adopting an older pet: they are often already house-trained, typically calmer and less demanding, and bring a mature and soulful companionship to their new homes.

Adoptions are available daily from noon to 4 p.m. at Woods Humane Society locations in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. The shelters are open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. To view available senior pets, visit www.woodshumane.org/adopt or call (805) 543-9316.

Woods Humane Society is located at 875 Oklahoma Ave. in San Luis Obispo and 2300 Ramona Rd. in Atascadero. The organization, founded in 1955, is a privately funded nonprofit that places up to 3,000 dogs and cats into homes each year. All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to adoption.

The Grey Muzzle Organization, founded in 2008, is a national nonprofit that provides funding to animal shelters and rescues to improve the lives of senior dogs. Since its founding, the organization has awarded $7.2 million in grants nationwide. More information is available at www.greymuzzle.org.
