Public health department shares safety tips for California Mid-State Fair

Department emphasizes hydration, hygiene, and vaccine awareness

– As the California Mid-State Fair begins in Paso Robles, the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department is encouraging fairgoers to take precautions to stay safe and healthy during their visit.

“The fair is a cherished summer tradition among many of our community members, and we want everyone to enjoy it to the fullest,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, county health officer. “By taking a few simple precautions—like staying cool, staying hydrated, and washing your hands—you can protect yourself and others while having fun.”

Officials advise attendees to stay cool by taking breaks in the shade and making use of cooler evening hours, especially for those unaccustomed to the heat. To stay hydrated, fairgoers can bring empty plastic water bottles or two sealed plastic bottles of water. Refill stations are available at the Main Quad and near the Cal Fire building.

To prevent the spread of germs, visitors are encouraged to wash their hands frequently at handwashing stations located throughout the fairgrounds, particularly after visiting animal exhibits and before eating or drinking.

Animal exhibits remain a popular attraction, but officials emphasize that livestock and other farm animals can carry germs that pose a risk to human health. To reduce exposure to harmful bacteria, officials recommend not eating, drinking, or placing anything in the mouth while in animal display areas. Those caring for animals should leave the area and wash their hands before eating or drinking.

Children’s items, such as toys, pacifiers, cups, baby bottles, and strollers, should not be brought into animal areas. Visitors are advised not to touch these items again until hands have been thoroughly washed with soap and water.

Parents and guardians are asked to closely supervise young children while in animal exhibits and prevent them from putting fingers or objects in their mouths. Handwashing with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds is strongly recommended after visiting any animal area, even if no direct animal contact occurred.

Anyone who experiences symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain after visiting animal exhibits should contact a healthcare provider and report the animal exposure.

Health officials also remind the public to remain vigilant due to recent national outbreaks of bird flu and measles. Routine vaccines continue to be the most effective protection against contagious illnesses such as measles, which can lead to serious complications, particularly in unvaccinated children.

Residents are encouraged to speak with a healthcare provider to confirm they are up to date on routine vaccinations. To make an appointment at a public health clinic, call (805) 781-5500.

The Mid-State Fair kicks of July 11 and runs from July 16 through July 27.
