Oak Ridge Estates becomes first Firewise neighborhood in Atascadero

Neighborhood collaborates with local agencies to reduce wildfire risks
– Oak Ridge Estates has become the first neighborhood in Atascadero to receive official recognition as a Firewise USA community by the National Fire Protection Association, according to a recent press release from the City of Atascadero.
The designation, finalized on May 22, followed the submission of an application on May 19 and reflects a multi-month effort by Oak Ridge Estates residents in coordination with Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services, the San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council, and Castle Rock Development.
As part of the process, residents formed a local board, completed a detailed wildfire risk assessment, and developed a three-year action plan aimed at reducing wildfire danger in the neighborhood.
The Firewise USA program is a national initiative that encourages residents to work together to reduce wildfire risk. Communities that participate conduct risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and work with fire agencies and organizations to improve preparedness.
According to Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services, recognition as a Firewise community offers benefits such as increased access to state and local fire mitigation resources, enhanced eligibility for grant funding, and potential insurance advantages.
Battalion Chief Dave Van Son said the recognition underscores the role of collaboration in wildfire preparedness and may motivate other neighborhoods in the city to pursue the same status.
